The interior of this design hotel is decorated with natural materials such as stone and wood with ethnic elements, African details and satin textiles in wonderful colours – altogether in a very successful, harmonious and modern African-colonial style.

Stepping into Bickley House’s premises, you are immediately filled with the feeling that Jonas Sandström has been influenced by the multicultural mix that is Cape Town. Influences from the Mediterranean, Africa and Scandinavia, even Asia, judging by the zen-like garden, where a softly curving pool makes for the obvious centre piece, surrounded by a small ocean of smooth, round pebbles – and areas of crushed seashells – in place of grass, complimented with distinctly marked plantations of trees and bushes.

In Cape Town one should stay at personal, small hotels, so called guesthouses. One of the more stylish ones is Swedish interior decorator, Jonas Sandström’s own boutique hotel Bickley House, situated in the oldest parts of Sea Point.

Entrepreneur Jonas Sandström has with his own hands, rebuilt an old hunting lodge from the 18th century, classified as a national monument, to a four-star design hotel. His vision was to create a serene, luxurious and relaxing escape for the guests, and a private terrace was therefore built in connection to each room. The style is African-colonial with a touch of Scandinavian minimalism. Banana cake, local cheese and fresh papaya is served for breakfast.
